PEI 2014: Honour the past, plan a bold future
|
In 2010, MASS LBP launched the first national conference to plan for Canada’s Sesquicentennial in 2017. Now we’re helping PEI set the stage for their big celebration in 2014 – the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference. This historic meeting in 1864 established the character of our country and provided the momentum necessary to carry Confederation forward. Much like Canada, a good thing doesn’t happen overnight. With 2014 sharply in their sights, PEI 2014 Incorporated is preparing for a spectacular year-long tribute. Together, PEI and all of Canada will commemorate this special occasion, honour our past, and envision a bold future. Known for our unbridled enthusiasm in all things 150, MASS embraced the opportunity to join the initial planning phase and engage Islanders from tip to tip. Building on our experience in conference design and programming, the PEI 2014 Planning Forum brought people together from across the Island. On December 1, nearly one-hundred provincial delegates – representing business, the arts, tourism and government – gathered at the Confederation Centre of the Arts to think imaginatively about 2014 and its legacy. After delivering the keynote address, Principal Peter MacLeod hosted a series of lively roundtable conversations. In small groups the delegates discussed 20 questions related to celebration, education, infrastructure, engagement and investment. At each table a local volunteer facilitated the discussion, recorded the conversation, and shared highlights with the rest of the room. The delegates were quick to recognize the vast potential of 2014. Islanders are looking to build new partnerships and spark growth, while celebrating their rich heritage and culture. They are also eager to make the most of new technology and social media, encouraging the celebration to ‘hit the road’ provincially, nationally and even internationally. Delegates stressed the importance of engaging Islanders of all ages and walks of life from the outset. They cited the success of the 1964/1967 Centennial and the keen desire of citizens to help lead the celebrations. In the coming weeks, a series of community forums across the length of the Island will invite residents to join the conversation and consider the recommendations made by the PEI Planning Forum. Patrick Ledwell, local actor and comedian, will host the forums. Already, there is a strong sense of momentum, ownership and pride for PEI2014. Just as 1864 was the starting point of a great nation, 2014 will be the start of a great celebration involving all Canadians. |
